Let's say if they are currently carpeted/ spruce, you can purchase our solid hardwood stairs tread. You may use those to go over the existing tread to reface the entire staircase.
Since you are planning to cap your existing stair structure, you may have concerns about the resulting height of your stairs. It's important to note that the first step will be 3/4-7/8" higher, while the last step will be 3/4"-7/8" lower. However, all the steps in between will remain the same height as before since you are capping all steps. In case you are changing the upper floor from carpet/laminate to hardwood, the flooring will add another 3/4" to the height, resulting in everything being leveled out. We highly recommend measuring the existing rise for the first and last steps before beginning the renovation to ensure that your staircase complies with by-law requirements and does not pose any safety hazards. Comfort is equally important, so make sure to prioritize that when planning the renovations
